Studio Equipment and Pilates Group Classes
Pilates Studio

Welcome to my Pilates studio located in the heart of Calmore, Hampshire

My studio has the reformer, cadillac and wunda chair, baby barrel and small Pilates equipment to add challenge to the machine based exercises.

The Pilates machine workout is unique because of how the spring tension works with the muscles. It can increase or decrease challenge and works the muscle in a functional and healthy action, particularly on the eccentric or return phase of a movement when muscle tension is releasing. Combining the Pilates equipment and the Aqua therapy cushion you will feel the whole body has been challenged but without the aggression and “no pain, no gain” ethos from traditional workouts. This allows the muscles to become balanced, efficient, conditioned and strong.

History of the Pilates machines

Joseph Pilates was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1880. He was a sickly child with rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever which led him to strengthen his body to overcome these conditions. He practised bodybuilding, boxing, gymnastics, skiing, diving, circus performing and also studied anatomy to find a way to develop a system of exercises which was later the beginning of the 34 original Pilates matwork exercises called “Contrology”.

These exercises were developed to keep the body uniformly strong. Joseph trained the inmates in a British world war one internment camp with this regime which was accredited for preventing many internees from succumbing to the 1918 influenza epidemic that killed thousands around the world.

After the war he emigrated to New York with his new wife Clara and opened his Pilates studio. There are some intriguing stories about how Joseph Pilates created his equipment such as he took bed springs with attached handles and then fixed these to a bed frame so immobile patients could exercise arms or legs even if they were bed bound or injured. This lead to the design of many of the pieces of equipment we see today in a Pilates studio such as the universal reformer, Cadillac (trapeze table), wunda chair, ladder barrels, ped-o-pull, foot corrector and magic circle to name a few, almost to the exact design Joseph created.
